CAR DEALERSHIP SITE DEVELOPMENT – PIKE COUNTY, KY

ABOUT THIS PROJECT

Jigsaw was selected to prepare a 4-acre site for the new location of a local car dealership. Preparation for the site required the mass excavation of 70,000 cubic yards of rock within close proximity of multiple businesses and residential subdivisions and adjacent to a busy highway intersection. Site work was further complicated due to the existence of a vast array of underground and aerial utilities, including sewer, water, gas, phone, broadband, and electric lines.

Many contractors would take a traditional blasting approach to level the land–but the location of the site made such an approach both expensive and high-risk. Blasting in such a location could cause potential damage to nearby structures or result in traffic delays. Blasting would also cause excessive noise for months and bother nearby residents. In addition, blasting would require an array of expensive permits and plans to protect the nearby homes, highways, and environment throughout the process. All of this would come with a significant price tag and add delays to the project’s timeline.

To solve these challenges, the Jigsaw team leveraged their knowledge of the coal industry and identified a type of heavy construction machinery that could be transported to the location and safely grind down the rocks—a surface miner. Doing so reduced owner liability while creating a graded material that was suitable for use under structure foundations, thereby reducing the overall project cost to the owner. Our solution saved the client money, protected the local environment, and created an attractive lot on which to build the dealership.
